Prud'hon, Pier Paul Born Pierre Prudon on
4 April 1758 in Cluny, the son of a stone carver. He studied in Dijon 1774-8
and, after a period in Paris 1780-3, returned to win the Dijon prix de Rome in
1784. In Italy 1785-7/8 he produced little (save a large panel based on Cortona's
Barberini ceiling, now at Dijon), but came to admire Leonardo da Vinci and
Correggio. He returned to Paris and produced vignettes, book illustrations and
small anecdotal paintings. After a period at Rigny (Franche-Compté) his career
blossomed under Napoleon. He made a series of decorative panels for Lanois,
fournisseur des armées, 1796-9, and through the agency of his compatriot
Frochot, préfet de la Seine, obtained a number of important commissions
including two ceilings for the Louvre, 1801-03, state portraits and designs for
state occasions (such as the Sacre in 1805, the celebration of Tilsit in 1807
and the arrival of Marie-Louise in 1810). He was made chevalier of the Legion of
Honour in 1808 and in 1810 became drawing master to the Empress Marie-Louise. He
exhibited at the Salon 1791-1824 (the last occasion posthumously), his
best-known compositions being shown 1808-15. After the Restoration he was
elected to the Institut in 1816 and commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the
Tuileries (cf. P273), but his work had lost its impetus. In 1821 he was much
affected by the suicide of his companion and pupil Constance Mayer and he died,
in some misery, in Paris on 16 February 1823. A reflective artist, he had sought
'un ton doux et tranquille, mais vigoreux, qui plaise au spectateur sans l'éblouir
el laisse l'âme jouir de tout ce qui l'affecte'; for David he remained 'le
Boucher, le Watteau de notre temps'. By Prud'hon Puppies,

Books:
The Language
of the Body : Drawings by Pierre-Paul Prud'Hon by Pierre-Paul Prud'Hon, et
al. Hardcover (October 1996)
Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823) was a painter and decorator who enjoyed
considerable success before withdrawing into collaboration with Constance Mayer.
He did less and less painting of his own but spent a great deal of time on what
was considered student practice--chalk studies of nudes. Prud'hon was a masterly
draftsman, and the drawings (académies) reproduced in this generously
illustrated book are impressive. They are also a bit strange. The female nudes
are graceful nymphs doing nothing in particular. The male nudes, in contrast,
are usually actively posed and frequently display girlishly pretty heads
incongruously attached to heavily muscled adult bodies. Mr. Elderfield's text
never truly accounts for this sexual disparity, but he makes a brave attempt at
it, and the drawings can easily and happily be enjoyed for their own sake. Pierre-Paul

Art and Fashion "out of
season" paintings
...Thus I dared looking for those
"common values" in the world of Fashion among many people
who hold out without having to rely on an understanding. The outcome
is amid paintings and sculptures "out of season" dedicated
to abstract expressions,
levity and photo
advertising, important pictures, objects
and perfumes, play
and strangely enough to some elderly portraits......so
is there really a necessity for a subject?...Art
